  • A Navajo round sandpainting, "Big Thunder" by Esther Etcitty. This weaving is a rare piece. The round shape was created during the time when wagons were the common use of transportation. The wagon wheel became a frame for creating this shape. Also, the sandpainting depicts a scene from the Shootingway Ceremony. This is part of a longer ceremony that is conducted to heal sicknesses that are associated with thunder, lightning and snakes. There is natural brown colors used in this weaving. There are also aniline dyes used in the blue and black. This weaving measures 32 inches in diameter. This weaving has the spirit line which is used by traditional weavers. This was used to ensure that creativity was not trapped in a piece. This weaving is in excellent condition.
