Largo, Bernyce

Bernyce Largo is a Navajo weaver from Crownpoint, New Mexico, and one of those people you simply enjoy knowing. Quiet and soft-spoken, with a warm smile, Bernyce comes from a family of talented weavers. Her sisters, Loretta Succo and Mary C. Begay, are accomplished weavers, as is her nephew, Ian Victorino. Bernyce spent many years working for the Crownpoint School District, and while work and family didn’t always leave much time for the loom, she has continued a weaving tradition that is very much a part of her family.

Bernyce generally creates smaller, beautifully designed weavings, often taking traditional Navajo patterns and design elements and interpreting them in her own way. That is one of the things we enjoy most about her work—you never quite know what she is going to come up with next. Her weavings are carefully made, creative and distinctly her own, and we are always happy when another one arrives at the gallery.
