Ben Nighthorse Campbell is a former American politician and artist. He was a member of the United States Senate, representing Colorado from 1993 to 2005. Campbell was the first Native American to serve in the Senate as a member of a recognized tribe, the Northern Cheyenne. He is also the only Native American to have served in both houses of the U.S. Congress.
Before and after his political career, he was an accomplished artist known for his jewelry-making and metalworking skills. As a Northern Cheyenne, Ben's roots were not in the Southwest, and his jewelry was never traditional. He started making jewelry with his father, using silver dollars they flattened on train tracks for their materials!
