  • Navajo weaving "Four in One" Germantown circa 1890. With the arrival of the railroad in the early 1880's, machine-produced yarn came into use in Navajo weaving: four-ply aniline dyed yarn known as Germantown because the yarn was manufactured in Pennsylvania. Germantown wools were bright, produced crisp designs, and tended to resist fading. This is a very large weaving, unusual in the "Four in One" design and is in great condition having been woven in the 1880's. Germantown wools were given to the best weavers as the wool was brought into the Trading Posts by the traders, and it was probably costly and was only available for a short period of time. Measures 5 foot 11 inches by 5 foot 11 inches.
