Steven Mopope (1898-1974) (Painted Robe) is a Kiowa who was born on the reservation in Oklahoma in what was called Indian Country, which was land held by the United States Government for the forced relocation of tribes. His Maternal Grandfather, Appiatan, was a respected Kiowa warrior. His great-uncles were Silver Horn and Oheltoint (Ohettoint), both of whom were accomplished artists. Oheltoint was one of the Fort Marion Ledger Artists. Mopope's paternal grandfather was a Spanish captive, adopted by Kiowa chief Many Bears. Mopope attended the Saint Patrick’s Indian Mission School in Anadarko and was a member of the Kiowa Six, a painting group of Plains artists that evolved from the school.
