The Navajo pitch basket is a humble water jug. It is a woven jar covered with a layer of gum or pitch inside(pinon sap) and out so that it can hold water. The pitch basket may have been adopted from neighboring tribes like the Paiutes. The pitch is melted over the fire and reaches a certain consistency before it is applied by hand on the outside then inside. Thie handles are made out of horse hair. This piece is well made with a little bit of the pitch coming off. A unique piece to add to your collection.
