This basket is made from reeds and bark of the sumac tree. This basket has various uses in Navajo culture but is mostly know as a wedding basket. The black designs represent the sacred mountains that surround Navajo land. The red ring in the middle represents the beginning of life. The center is the emergence where the Navajo people believe we came from. this basket has discoloration on the front side of the basket when compared to the back. The front may have been exposed to light which can change the color. It is still woven tight with no breaks in rods. This basket has an A and a B side from years of exposure to the light.
