This basket is made from reeds and bark of the sumac tree. This basket has various uses in Navajo culture; puberty rites, healing ceremonies and is mostly known as a wedding basket. The black designs represent the sacred mountains that surround Navajo land. The red ring in the middle represents the beginning of life. The center is the emergence where the Navajo people believe we came from. This has a tight consistent weave when looking at from the top. It has a fade in color on both sides. On the bottom there a a couple of breaks in sumac. Most older baskets have which comes natural. However it is a beautiful basket to add to your collection.
