The Hupa tribe lived along the Trinity river. They share common traditions with the Karuk and Yuroke tribes. Most tribes in this area use the similar styles of plain, two strand twining in their basketry. The Hupa use California haze, pine root, California grass and maiden fern in their basketry. This basket is very stiff and light. It has a unique over stitch in the front of the design that wraps around the basket. The starting knot is very different from Southwest tribes and has an inward motion. This is a unique basket to add to your collection.
