Three different colored butterflies go around the circumference of this coiled Hopi basket. Other then a little fading this basket is in really good condition. Hopi baskets are utilitarian and made for carrying food and other items but most importantly the Hopi basket is part of the Hopi tradition, culture and ceremonies. The coiled baskets come the the Second Mesa and often have designs of the Kachina on them. Baskets are given at special ceremonies and the butterfly represents migration and transformation.
